July is the most sought-after month in Lençóis Maranhenses. The rain of the first half of the year has left the lagoons at their highest, the sky opens up and the contrast between blue water and white dunes is at its strongest. It is also school-holiday month in Brazil, and the whole region fills up.
Why July
The lagoons fill with the rain from January to June and, in July, they are full across the park. Days are sunny, with the odd cloud, and the wind starts to arrive: at 12 to 20 knots, it is the start of the kitesurfing season and the gentlest time for beginners. Temperatures stay between 26 and 32 °C.
Book early
Atins has few places to stay, and the most popular sell out first in July. Buriti has only seven units: five bungalows around the stone pool, for up to 2 guests each, and two 66 m² chalets with a private pool, for up to 3 guests. Five days in Atins
- Day 1: arrive by the Preguiças River and watch the sunset from the rooftop.
- Day 2: the lagoons of Canto do Atins, by 4x4 with a guide, with time to swim.
- Day 3: the Preguiças River by speedboat: Vassouras, Mandacaru and Caburé.
- Day 4: sunrise on the dunes and an afternoon at the beach, or a kite lesson in the village.
- Day 5: a free morning at the stone pool and the trip back.

Getting here
Fly to São Luís, drive about four hours to Barreirinhas and, from there, go down the Preguiças River by speedboat, in about an hour, or by 4x4 across the sand, in about an hour and a half.
