Brazil's Carnival runs from 5 to 10 February 2027. In Atins, the sand-street village at the gateway to Lençóis Maranhenses, it is a holiday for people who want nature and rest: beach, river, dunes and a quiet house to come back to at the end of the day.
What Atins is like in February
February is the start of the rainy season. Rain usually comes in showers, with sunshine in between, and turns the dunes greener. Lagoons begin to form between the dunes, but this is not yet the full-lagoon landscape, which runs from June to September. Temperatures stay between 26 and 32 °C, the sea is warm and the village is far quieter than in July.

What to do at Carnival in Atins
- Preguiças River by speedboat: Vassouras, Mandacaru with its lighthouse, and Caburé, the strip of sand between river and sea.
- Dunes and lagoons of Canto do Atins: about 40 minutes by 4x4 with a guide. In February, the lagoons of the day depend on how much rain has fallen, and the guide knows where the water is.
- Sunrise on the dunes: leave before five and be back in time for breakfast.
- Beach and river mouth: the beach at Atins is long and shallow, and the mouth of the Preguiças is a few minutes from the village.
- A rainy day at the pousada: stone pool, rooftop, spa and regional breakfast served when you like. In the Buriti Private chalets, the pool is all yours.

Getting here
Fly to São Luís, drive about four hours to Barreirinhas and, from there, go down the Preguiças River by speedboat, in about an hour, or by 4x4 across the sand, in about an hour and a half.
